Minted from 1911 to 1935, the George V design was the last British gold sovereign minted for regular issue. These sovereigns are exceptionally well-struck with a lovely orange-gold color and strong, detailed devices. The obverse features a portrait of George V; the reverse depicts the mythical slaying of the dragon by St.George.
George V was the second son of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. A career navy officer, he succeeded to the throne in 1910 and became an inspirational leader during World War I, visiting the front numerous times to bolster morale.
After the War, the British Empire broke apart as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa all demanded the right to home rule. George V’s foresighted approach to the throne was crucial in in easing this profound national transition. By elevating the monarchy to a moral position above the turmoil of daily politics, he helped the crown to evolve into the symbolic institution of British family values and customs that we know today.
Known as “the most trusted coins in the world,” these British Sovereigns were included in the survival kits of American pilots during both World War II and Desert Storm.
