Argentina Gold 5 Peso, XF/AU
“Argentino” or Liberty head design (Minted 1881-1896)
|
We are very pleased to present these scarce Argentina 5 peso (also called 1 Argentino) gold coins, in Extra Fine to Almost Uncirculated condition (XF/AU). Almost the same size and weight as British gold sovereigns but far scarcer on the market, Argentinos are an excellent value at current premiums.
Argentina has issued very little gold coinage during its turbulent history, and much of it has been provincial. The early coins, denominated in escudos, were issued intermittently for just a few years from 1816 to 1836. From 1881 to 1896, during a period of relative political stability, the lovely 1 argentino and half-argentino gold coins were produced. Out of an uncertain original mintage, relatively few have survived and even fewer in XF/AU condition like these.
Second in South America only to Brazil in size and population, Argentina is an immense plain rising from the Atlantic to the towering peaks of the Andes Mountains. It is home to Aconcagua (22,834 ft.), the highest peak in the world outside Asia. Argentina is bordered by Chile to the west, Bolivia and Paraguay to the north, and by Uruguay and Brazil to the east.
Turbulent past
Spain first occupied Argentina in 1516 and established a permanent colony on the site of Buenos Aires in 1580. Soon a thriving cattle industry developed on the Pampas, the fertile rolling plains to the south. Argentina declared itself independent of Spain in 1810, but it was decades before there was a true unity in Argentina, and some people will argue that unity is not complete even today. After decades of dictatorship and strife, Argentina adopted a Federalist constitution in 1853 and began a period of democratic government under a series of elected leaders.
These beautiful “Argentino” 5 peso gold coins were minted during one of Argentina’s periods of democratic political calm. Appropriately, the democratic ideals of freedom and unity are reflected in the design: a lovely portrait on Liberty adorns the obverse; and the traditional seal of Argentina, with two hands joining together, graces the reverse.
