Hungary Gold 20 Korona, BU
Franz Joseph I design (Minted 1892-1915)
|
Hungary 20 korona gold coins are fascinating pieces of history from the glory days of the Habsburg dynasty (often misspelled Hapsburg) and the Austria-Hungary empire. Minted from 1892 to 1915, featuring Emperor Franz Joseph I, they are slightly larger than the extremely popular French 20 franc Roosters of the same era but many times scarcer, and far more interesting to world gold collectors.
Franz Joseph 20 koronas in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition are an excellent value today, offering an established collector premium over their gold value and a low price in the current market. We have a very limited stock of choice Brilliant Uncirculated coins, all of which are exceptionally well-struck and lustrous.
The legendary Habsburg dynasty
The Habsburg dynasty and its successor line, the Habsburg-Lorraine family, ruled over vast portions of Europe, including The Holy Roman Empire, for more than six centuries. Starting in the 11th century, in present-day Switzerland, the Habsburgs quickly extended their domain through Germany and Austria and then, within a few hundred years, to Spain, Portugal, southern Italy, much of Eastern Europe, and as far east as Transylvania. Beyond their own borders, they had direct blood ties to most of Europe's monarchs, which is not surprising given the Habsburg family motto: "Let others wage wars, but you, happy Austria, shall marry."
Franz Joseph was born in 1830 and became Habsburg Emperor in 1867, at the age of eighteen. He steered a cautious course at first, granting a constitution in early 1849 but then quickly replacing it with an absolute monarchy. Despite his autocratic political beliefs, he was immensely popular among all the various national groups that comprised his kingdom, attributable to the above average standard of living enjoyed by his subjects. His 68-year reign, until his death in 1916, is the third-longest in the recorded history of Europe after that of Louis XIV of France and Johannes II, Prince of Liechtenstein.
These lovely 20 korona gold coins harken back to the glory days of the world's most prestigious ruling family, the Habsburgs. They are a must for every collector of European gold!
